That’s why I’m going to tell you all about my favorite new phone company, Tello!
Tello Mobile, a player in the wireless network market since 2016, provides you with flexibility with no contracts, affordability with their most expensive plan being $25/month, and reliable coverage by using T-Mobile towers.
I recently had the opportunity to put Tello’s cellphone service to the test while we drove from Minnesota to the West Coast and let me tell you, I was impressed!!
To help you decide if this is worth making the jump from your current cell service provider, I’ve created this really thorough review of my experience with Tello.
Below, I’ll tell you what Tello has to offer, including their phone plans, associated costs, pros and cons, and a bit of other information that I think you’re going to find valuable if you’re looking to switch phone plans.
By the end of this review, I hope to answer all the questions you might have about Tello and help you decide if Tello Mobile is the right choice for you. Let’s get to it!
What Is In This Review
To make sure you’re getting the most out of this review, I took Tello on a road trip to the Western United States to test out their cell coverage. This unique opportunity gave me a really good test of how Tello performed in a variety of areas and allowed me to cover the topics below:
- What is Tello Mobile
- How is their coverage in urban and rural areas
- Tello Pricing & Plans
- Pros and Cons of Tello
- Additional Information About Tello
What is Tello Mobile
Tello Mobile is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) that operates on T-Mobile’s network, providing nationwide coverage across the United States.
You might be asking what does it mean to be a MVNO. What it means is that Tello does not own its own wireless infrastructure but rather leases it from a major carrier—in this case, T-Mobile, America’s largest 5G network. This is a key factor in Tello being able to offer competitive pricing and flexible plans without sacrificing anything on coverage quality.
How Good Is The Cell Coverage
Anyone looking to switch cell phone service providers is going to be curious about how the cell coverage performs. I mean, there’s nothing worse than having poor service when you need it the most.
Since Tello uses T-Mobile towers, its coverage map pretty much mirrors what you would get with a T-Mobile phone, but at a fraction of the cost!
I was fortunate enough to give Tello a really good test in some of the most remote places in the country as I traveled with my family in our camper. Our route took us from Minnesota to the Pacific Northwest and down to the Grand Canyon.
Here’s what I learned about Tello coverage during my test run:
- Coverage in the Mid-West is rock solid. I don’t know if it’s because everything is flat or if there are more towers, but we had no issues with service in the Plains states.
- Coverage on the West Coast was good in cities and the surrounding areas but really struggled in remote locations like national parks. To be fair, we also had a big-name service provider, and it was only slightly better service in the parks, but at 5x the monthly cost.
Tello Mobile Phone Plans and Costs
I don’t know about you, but I hate the idea of being locked into a long-term contract with the big name companies. One of the standout features I love about Tello is the flexibility and customization offered in their phone plans.
Unlike traditional carriers that provide a set number of plans, Tello allows users to build their own plan based on their specific needs. You’ll get the ability to adjust your talk, text, and data usage so you’re only paying for what you need!
Build Your Own Plan
Tello’s “Build Your Own Plan” feature is designed to cater to users who have varying data, talk, and text requirements. Here’s a breakdown of how you can customize your plan:
- Data: Tello offers a range of data options from no data (Wi-Fi only) to unlimited data. Intermediate data options include No Data, 1 GB, 2 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB, 15 GB, and Unlimited Data (Throttled after 35GB of high-speed data usage).
- Talk: Users can choose from no minutes, 100 minutes, 300 minutes, 500 minutes, or unlimited talk.
- Text: All plans come with unlimited texting.
Cost of Plans
What’s crazy about Tello is that the unlimited talk, text, and data plan only costs $25/month! Say what?!?
I was paying over $100/month with Verizon and still disappointed with their service. The cost of Tello’s plans are ridiculously low and can vary based on the combination of data, talk, and text you choose. But again, the the top tier plan is $25/month!
I don’t know of any other phone service provider with that level of flexibility in plans and costs that low!
Here’s a sample of different pricing combinations:
- Unlimited Talk & Text with No Data: $8 per month
- Unlimited Talk & Text with 1 GB Data: $9 per month
- Unlimited Talk & Text with 2 GB Data: $10 per month
- Unlimited Talk & Text with 5 GB Data: $14 per month
- Unlimited Talk & Text with 10 GB Data: $19 per month
- Unlimited Talk & Text with 15 GB Data: $24 per month
- Unlimited Talk & Text with Unlimited Data: $25 per month (Data speeds are throttled after 35 GB)
Where else could you get an unlimited phone plan for just $25 per month!
These prices are subject to change and may include promotions or discounts depending on when you sign up.
Pros of Tello Mobile
Switching to Tello mobile offers many benefits, and I want to make sure you understand what you’re getting when you do!
- Affordability: One of Tello’s primary selling points is its affordability. The ability to customize plans ensures that you only pay for what you need, which can result in significant savings compared to traditional carriers. I’m saving over $75/month compared to my old Big Name, Long-Term Contract service provider!
- No Contracts: Tello operates on a no-contract basis, meaning you are not locked into a long-term agreement. This provides flexibility and the freedom to switch plans without penalty when you realize that you might not really need unlimited everything on your plan.
- Family Plans: Tello allows you to manage multiple lines from one account making this the perfect option for families that want flexibility in their cell service provider!
- Nationwide Coverage: Because Tello uses T-Mobile’s network, you can be confident that they offer reliable coverage across the United States and that’s consistent with what I experienced in my travels. By using T-Mobiles towers, this ensures you’ll have access to a robust network infrastructure and consistent service quality.
- International Calls & Texts to Over 60 Countries: Tello includes unlimited international calling and texting to over 60 countries ins, which is a significant benefit for users with friends and family abroad.
- Free Hotspot: Tello allows users to use their data as a mobile hotspot at no extra charge, which can be incredibly useful for those who need to connect other devices to the internet on the go.
- 24/7 Customer Support: Tello offers customer support around the clock, ensuring that help is available whenever you need it.
- Easy Online Account Management: Tello’s user-friendly website and mobile app make it easy to manage your account, monitor usage, and adjust plans as needed.
Cons of Tello Mobile
- Data Throttling: For users on the unlimited data plan, data speeds are throttled after 35 GB of usage. While this is common among carriers, it can be a downside for heavy data users.
- No In-Store Support: Tello is an online-only service, which means there are no physical stores for in-person assistance. This could be a drawback for users who prefer face-to-face customer service.
- Device Compatibility: Tello operates on the GSM network, which means that not all devices are compatible. Users need to ensure their phone is unlocked and compatible with T-Mobile’s network.
Additional Features and Information
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
Tello supports the Bring Your Own Device program, allowing users to bring their own compatible devices to the network. Keep in mind that not every phone is compatible.
To check compatibility, Tello provides an easy-to-use tool on their website where you can enter your device’s IMEI number. You can find that number on your phone near the model/serial numbers.
This feature is particularly useful for those who do not wish to purchase a new phone, but the phone you bring must be compatible with T-Mobile services.
Purchasing a Device from Tello
For those who don’t have compatible phones, or are looking to upgrade to a new device, Tello offers a range of phones for purchase on their website. The selection includes budget-friendly options as well as more premium devices like newer model iPhones.
All phones sold by Tello are compatible with their service and come unlocked.
Referral Program
Tello’s referral program allows users to earn credits by referring friends and family. For every person you refer who activates a Tello line, both you and the person you refer receive a $10 credit. This can be a great way to reduce your monthly bill.

Mobile App
Tello’s mobile app is available for both iOS and Android devices. The app provides a convenient way to manage your account, pay your bill, and monitor usage. It also includes features such as plan customization and customer support access.
Customer Reviews and Feedback
If you take a look at the customer reviews of Tello Mobile, you’re going to find out that they are all very positive, with many users praising the affordability and flexibility of the plans. The no-contract policy is also frequently highlighted as a major benefit. Customers are excited about our international calling capabilities.
However, some users have expressed concerns about data throttling, but keep in mind that data throttling is a common practice amongst all service providers.
Overall, Tello has a strong reputation for customer satisfaction, particularly among those looking for budget-friendly and customizable mobile plans.
Comparison with Other MVNOs
To provide a comprehensive review, it’s essential to compare Tello with other popular MVNOs such as Mint Mobile and Visible. I want you to understand how these other companies stack up against Tell so you can make an educated decision to switch and start saving money!
Mint Mobile
Mint Mobile offers similar affordability and some flexibility, with plans starting as low as $15 per month for 4 GB of data. However, Mint Mobile requires customers to purchase plans in bulk (3, 6, or 12 months), which can be less convenient than Tello’s month-to-month billing. You lose that flexibility to adjust your plan at any time.
Visible
Visible, which operates on Verizon’s network, offers a single plan with unlimited data, talk, and text for $40 per month. When you could get the same plan on a network that’s just as strong for nearly half the price with Tello, that rules this one out for me!
Final Thoughts on Tello Mobile
Tello stands out in the crowded MVNO market due to its affordability, flexibility, and no-contract policy. The ability to build your own plan ensures that you only pay for what you need, making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious consumers like us.
With low-cost plans, international calling to 60+ countries, and extreme flexibility, the overall value and customer satisfaction make Tello my top pick for those looking to switch carriers.
If you’re in the market for a new mobile service provider and value customization, affordability, and reliable coverage, Tello Mobile should be at the top of your list. With no contracts and competitive pricing, it’s easy to see why so many users are making the switch to Tello.
