Not only will developing good time management skills improve your school life but it will also carry over to other parts of your life as well.
Make a Plan
First things first – you need to make a plan. Making a plan means looking at what you need to do, and the amount of time you have to do it in.
It means breaking down each tiny thing that you need to do to achieve your goal. If you want to improve your study habits you always need a plan.
Use a Planner
A planner is an ultimate way to get organized! There are lots of different planners out there, including ones specifically for studying.
Block out Time for Each Task
Leading on from having a planner, you can use this to time block your tasks.
Time blocking is where you give a certain task a certain amount of time. Say that you have math to do. You would allocate it time, e.g., 1 hour, from 6 pm – 7 pm. This is a time block.
The reason that time blocking works is because you are concentrating on one thing at a time.
4. Take Time To Study Each Day (Don’t Cram)
We all know how it goes – you plan to study on another day, but time stretches, and you’ve realized that you’re behind!
It would be best if you crammed which isn’t the most efficient way of doing things.
Every day, you are going to need to set time aside to study. It needs to become an automatic habit, and doing it every day will help this happen.
We know that this may not sound like the most fun thing ever – but it will all be worth it in the end when you’ve got your straight A’s.
Find the Right Study Space
Something else that’s going to set you up for success is making sure you have a productive workspace to study at.
Make sure that you make things as easy as possible for yourself to study each day. This will look different for everyone, so do what works best for you.
5. Take Good Notes
It can be tempting to keep your head down and be quiet in class but its important to pay attention. This is a good habit for a successful student.
When it comes to taking notes, you’ll have to find a system that works for you.
Remember that it may make sense at the time you are writing it, but you need it to make sense when you are going over them later on.
When you are in class, make sure that you ask questions. This is one of the most important things that you can do to become a good student.
People don’t ask questions to be annoying – they ask questions to learn more.
If you don’t understand something your teacher is talking about, you need to ask them about it.
Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks, as they aren’t the ones that will be taking the exams for you.
6. Don’t Multitask While Doing Homework
When you are doing your homework, you will likely get bored and your brain will try and find some other things for you to do.
These are also proper study habits for college students!
As tempting as it may be to multitask, you need to make sure that you remain focused. This is one of the top qualities of successful students.
There are some ways that you can help yourself to do just that:
Reduce Distractions
Remember, your brain is going to look for ways to do things other than study.
Only you will know what will distract you, so have a look around and see how you can minimize this.
Keep Your Phone Out of Reach
It sounds obvious, but one of our biggest distractions is our phone. After all, there are friends to chat with, cat memes to scroll through!
Make it a bit harder for yourself by putting your phone somewhere you can’t easily reach.
It doesn’t mean that you can’t go on your phone if you need to – it’s just to stop you from getting distracted and doing some mindless scrolling. We’ve all been there!
Work on One Task at a Time
Multitasking is something that we convince ourselves that we are doing to be really efficient, but multitasking only leads to getting less done!
Our brain can only concentrate on one thing at a time, so trying to flit between tasks isn’t going to get you any further forward.
Time blocking will help you here, but you may also want to write down each specific thing that you need to do within the block and only do one at a time.
7. Find a Study Group and Search Out Additional Resources Offered At School
A study group may not be at the top of your list for the most fun way to spend your time, but it’s going to really help you become a successful student.
Study groups are really helpful because you all have a common goal – to be a good student. And you can always pick up the habits of a good student.
